On Saturday 27th February 2021 the BCDD hosted ‘Your Heart, Your Health’ in celebration of cardiovascular disease awareness month in February. Heart disease is a condition that significantly affects the afro-caribbean community. It is defined as any condition that affects the structure or function of the heart and is one of the most widespread health challenges in the UK and around the world. Examples of heart disease & cardiovascular disease include: angina, coronary heart disease and heart failure.
At BCDD we felt it was very important for us to raise awareness of heart disease to increase understanding of the risk factors, the steps required to reduce any risk factors and provide information on developing healthy behaviours and lifestyle changes.
Our guest speaker was Dr Winston Martin, a consultant cardiologist based in the Kent region. Dr Martin has an established reputation for providing high quality, patient-centred care with a particular focus on difficult-to-treat hypertension, cardiovascular risk reduction and angina. In addition to this, he has a particular interest in coronary heart disease, angioplasty & stenting. The event involved a presentation from Dr Martin surrounding heart disease and hypertension. This was then followed by a Q&A session.
The event was well attended with 91 registrations.
