Our ‘Oral Health in the African-Caribbean community’ event in collaboration with Budding Black Dentists (BDD) was held on Saturday 20th March 2021. The event was organised in celebration of world oral health day and the main purpose was to highlight good oral hygiene practices. It provided an introduction to oral health, highlighted the importance of dental hygiene, debunked dental care myths & an introduction to good dental care habits. There was also a talk about oral cancers and this was followed by a Q&A panel discussion.
The panelists included:
- Mr Kavin Andi, an award-winning consultant Oral and Maxillofacial surgeon based in London who specialises in head and neck cancers.
- Ms Jada Britton a final year dental student and Ms Simisola Fynn-Famodun the founder of Budding Black Dentists. They provided some myth busting around oral health and spoke about getting into dentistry.
- Dr. Zara Nortley a dentist and advanced medical aesthetics practitioner based in Manchester. Dr Nortley’s talk was entitled “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure” and she discussed her work, dental anxiety and rights to access dental care.
