BCDD was proud to have taken part in the 2025 Black Health Inequalities conference, hosted by the London Inspire Programme at the Queen Elizabeth II Conference centre in Westminster, London on Wednesday 26th March.
Exceeding standards of excellence set by last years’ event, the day began with passionate presentations by distinguished speakers, including Paulette Hamilton, All-Party Parliamentary Group MP Chair on ‘Legislating for Improved Health Outcomes’, Nigerian kidney transplant surgeon Professor Nadey Hakim on his tireless work in his homeland, and Professor Margaret Ikpoh, RCGP vice-chair, on the value of community involvement to ensure patient safety. Mr Edward Moses, Director of Policy & Engagement for the NHS 10 Year Health Plan, described the “biggest conversation in NHS history”, as multiple co-production initiatives are currently underway to engage underserved communities in its implementation. The day would not have been complete without Professor Kevin Fenton, CBE, London Regional Director of Public Health, reminding us to “know better & do better”, as we use improved data on Black health issues to drive the development of programmes for education & improved outcomes.
Impactful research posters were on display, highlighting new findings that traditional diagnostic tests do not accurately diagnose endometrial cancer in Black women, the higher risk of prostate cancer to Black men, and the potential for culturally-relevant creative arts therapies as part of treatment for mental health disorders among Black youth.
The days progressed with workshops on diversity in digital health, tackling racism & inequalities in health, chronic diseases & Black mental & maternal health.
BCDD members Dr Stacey Bryan, Dr Michelle Stennett and Dr Tesha-Dawn Brathwaite enjoyed networking and sharing of ideas with our partners @CAHN @ACMM and @ACLT, amongst the many other organisations bringing valuable contributions with their exhibitions.
