On Wednesday 19th June, the British Caribbean Doctors and Dentists Association was honoured to attend a Windrush Day Reception held at 10 Downing Street. The event brought together key figures from across the UK to celebrate and recognise the lasting legacy of the Windrush generation and their immeasurable contribution to British society.
In his address, Prime Minister Keir Starmer paid tribute to the courage, resilience, and service of those who arrived in the UK from the Caribbean between 1948 and 1971. He acknowledged their role in shaping the NHS, public services, and British cultural life—recognising that today’s Britain is stronger, more diverse, and more vibrant because of their efforts.
A key highlight of the evening was the announcement of the new Windrush Commissioner, a role created to safeguard and continue the legacy of justice, representation, and advocacy for the Windrush community. This appointment marks a vital step forward in acknowledging past wrongs while looking ahead to lasting change and accountability.
The reception was also an opportunity for rich networking and connection among leaders, advocates, and professionals committed to honouring the Windrush legacy and supporting future generations. The warm atmosphere was matched by exceptional Caribbean-inspired food and music, which added a joyful and authentic touch to the afternoon.
