On Saturday 12th July 2025, members of the British Caribbean Doctors and Dentists Association (BCDD) were proud to attend the 2nd Caribbean and African Health Network (CAHN) Black Healthcare Awards.
The evening was a powerful celebration of Black excellence in healthcare — honouring the achievements of professionals who continue to shape and uplift our communities. Surrounded by leaders, trailblazers, and inspiring performances, the event was a vibrant reminder of the importance of representation, recognition, and unity in the healthcare sector.
We were especially pleased to be in a position to sponsor one of our student volunteers to attend this prestigious event — an experience we hoped would inspire and empower her as she embarks on her own journey in healthcare. A summary of her reflections is included below:
“I had the opportunity to meet many brilliant individuals, including medical students who were aspiring to enter the healthcare industry. They were incredibly friendly and welcoming which made me feel comfortable asking them questions about their courses and experiences. One of the highlights of the event was meeting and sitting next to the first Black female orthopaedic surgeon in the UK (Miss Samantha Tross). She was truly inspirational, as she paved the way for future Black professionals and gave the Black community a powerful role model to look up to! I also had a great conversation with a GP who was very kind and spoke passionately about her role and what motivates her in her work. What I loved most about the event was the celebration of Black Excellence, bringing together of the Black community, supporting one another and honouring achievements. We extend our congratulations to all award recipients with special recognition to our members and supporters Dr Ishtar Govia (Researcher of the Year), Dr Intikhab Zafuralllah (Highly Commended for the Clinical Excellence Award for Consultants), Dr Aiesha Alexander (Highly Commended for the Junior Doctor of the Year Award), and Miss Samantha Tross who delivered a speech in lieu of her Lifetime Achievement Award in 2024.
BCDD remains committed to supporting and amplifying the voices of Black healthcare professionals across the UK. We’re already looking forward to next year’s celebration.
