In the lead up to World Lupus Day on 10th May, we organised an event named ‘learn about lupus’. Lupus, also known as SLE, is an autoimmune disease that causes severe tiredness and joint pain. The body mistakenly attacks healthy tissue and the disease can affect the skin, joints, kidneys, brain, and other organs. It is more likely to affect those from an african or caribbean background.
The aim of the event was to educate individuals on Lupus & increase awareness of the disease. We were joined by Dr Gerald George, Dr Ronnie Cooper and Mr Karl Mc Pherson.
Dr Gerald George is a Consultant Rheumatologist based in Kent. He has 21 years experience working in both the NHS and Private Medical Practice, treating Lupus. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians. During his talk Dr George discussed Systemic Lupus Erythematous (SLE), signs and symptoms and management.
Dr Cooper is a Consultant Dermatologist who has many years of experience working in the Caribbean and the UK. Dr Cooper discussed the signs, symptoms and management of Discoid Lupus.
Mr Karl McPherson a Consultant Obstetrician & Gynaecologist specialising in Fetal Medicine who is also an individual living with Lupus. Mr Mc Pherson shared his story and experience as a patient.
The webinar was followed by a question & answer (Q&A) session giving participants the opportunity to ask our speakers any questions after their talks.
